The Cathedral

The Cathedral of Santa Marta was the first basilica built in Latin America and its construction dates back to 1765, when the then governor Don Andres Perez in order to build a cathedral that would endure and resist the uncertainties gave the task to the Engineer Don Juan Cayetano To begin the plans of this Church of the Renaissance Catholic faith. At the beginning of its construction the city had a very diminished population due to the multiple attacks of English, French and Dutch pirates who from 1543 until 1712 managed to burn and loot the city more than 20 times. This Cathedral is one of the monuments that most make us feel proud to the Samarios, is full of memories and legends, and somewhere in its construction is hidden a small urn that contains the heart and the entrails of the Liberator Simon Bolivar, who in On December 20, 1930 he received a solemn funeral parade from the Customs House to this place. There are also the remains of the founder of Santa Marta, Rodrigo de Bastidas, which were brought from the Dominican Republic on Friday, September 18, 1953.
